Extended Weekend Edition (Thursday – Tuesday)

I’m sharing my birthday itinerary because you should absolutely steal it! It's not just great for birthdays, but for group trips, girl trips, and baecations. It balances culture, celebration, and downtime — and it’s designed for an extended weekend: land Thursday afternoon, depart Tuesday morning.

Where We Stayed & Getting Around

We stayed in an Airbnb close to the hotel zone but far enough away to enjoy a quieter, calmer side of Cancun (near Plaza Las Américas, Amerimed Hospital, and a Walmart Express). Ubers were very cheap — most rides under $10 USD, and often under $5 — so getting around was super easy and stress-free.

Excursions & Activities

We booked most of our excursions in advance, which gave us the best selection for dates. We used GetYourGuide.com for most of them:

  • Chichen Itza + the cenote — for culture and education

  • Hip Hop Boat Party + Coco Bongo Beach Party — for the ultimate daytime turn-up

  • Isla Mujeres — for a little beach rest-and-relaxation

Tip: Make sure to check that the Coco Bongo Beach Party isn’t booked for a private event. Sometimes it gets reserved, and the online calendar doesn’t always reflect that.

I booked my glamorous birthday photoshoot directly through My Flying Dress Cancun and added the clear kayak package. I managed to do this photoshoot after a night of clubbing and only 3 hours of sleep (yes, I know that’s crazy). Please adjust this itinerary to suit the needs of you and your besties — these are purely suggestions, not rules.

Restaurants: We made reservations in advance for dinner at Rosa Negra and Chambao Cancun. Reservations may not be necessary, but I recommend them — the spots we chose are on the pricier side, and absolutely worth it. The food is top tier, the dining experience is unmatched, and the staff was super kind, energetic, and accommodating.

There are other restaurants that are better for a more casual dining experience. Try El Poblano for traditional tacos, guacamole, and a delicious michelada. We also wandered to La Bamba in the hotel zone for some fresh, delicious seafood.

Activity Highlight: Hip Hop Boat Party

The highlight of my actual birthday. The energy hit from the moment we stepped on the boat. Two levels, an open bar, and music from oldies to today’s hip-hop and R&B, plus reggaeton, soca, and dancehall — literally all my favorite genres. The first floor had plunge pools and jacuzzis where you could dance, and the boat even parked in the open ocean so we could free swim. Yes, lifejackets were included. The crystal-clear turquoise waters were refreshing and gave us a chance to cool off in the midst of all the dancing. Drinks never stopped flowing. Everybody on the boat was celebrating something — smiles everywhere, pure joy in the air. And yes, there was a twerk contest. Guess who won? Me! I even got a bottle of champagne. The staff was so kind, friendly, and turnt; they know exactly what they’re doing. It was an unforgettable way to bring in my birthday. Mexico never lets me down. I love a Mexican birthday vacation. 5-star experience. 10’s across the board. I would do this again and again.

Why this itinerary works

It’s intentional without being rigid, perfect for friends or couples who want fun and flexibility.

  • Front-loaded glam — Chambao, Rosa Negra

  • One big culture day — Chichen Itza + cenote

  • One birthday blowout day — boat party + club

  • One content day — photoshoot + Coco Bongo Beach Party

  • One recovery/flex day — Isla Mujeres or rest

This itinerary works for a long weekend because it balances glam, culture, adventure, partying, and downtime — all without packing too much into one day.
